Lt. Heather “Lucky” Penney

Lt. Heather “Lucky” Penney was on a runway at Andrews Air Force Base and ready to fly. She had her hand on the throttle of an F-16 and she had her orders: Bring down United Airlines Flight 93. The day’s fourth hijacked airliner seemed to be hurtling toward Washington. Penney, one of the first two combat pilots in the air that morning, was told to stop it.

The one thing she didn’t have as she roared into the crystalline sky was live ammunition. Or missiles. Or anything at all to throw at a hostile aircraft.

Except her own plane. So that was the plan.

When asked why she was willing to fly a kamikaze mission, Penney doesn’t hesitate. “Why? Because there are things in this world that are more important than ourselves. Freedom. The Constitution of the United States. Our way of life. Mom, baseball, apple pie; these things and so many more that make us uniquely American. We belong to something greater than ourselves. As complex and diverse and discordant as it is, this thing, this idea called America, binds us together in citizenship and community and brotherhood.”

You know what really grinds my gears…

…is when groups/people/entities distribute information that is based on half truths or just absolute lies.  Maybe this post will display my stage in the maturing process (read aging) but I find it more and more important these days to not take things on first blush.  You have to dig deeper into topics to get the truth or at a minimum to find the slant that the author is going for.

Maybe that is a good thing.  A generation of people growing up knowing that they will need to investigate important topics beyond the readily accessible information.
